Future Ready Institute Course Overviews

Fundamentals of Construction: Fundamentals of Construction is the foundational course for construction in the Future Ready Institute of Construction, Engineering, and Design.  This course covers essential knowledge, skills, and concepts required for careers in the construction field.  The course begins with Construction Safety and and a focus on Construction Math.  The course introduces students to: hand tools, power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging, and material handling.  The course also covers basic employability skills and basic communication skills.  Successful completion of the course results in two industry certifications from NCCER (Basic Safety, Core Construction).

Structural Systems 1: Structural Systems 1 builds on the the foundations learned in Fundamentals of Construction as the second course for construction in the Future Ready Institute of Construction, Engineering, and Design.  Topics covered in this course are: (1) Orientation to the Trade, (2) Building Materials, Fasteners, and Adhesives, (3) Hand and Power Tools, (4) Construction Drawings, Specifications, and Layout, (5) Floor Systems, (6) Wall Systems, (7) Roof Systems, (8) Introduction to Building Envelope Systems, (9) Basic Stair Layouts.  Successful completion of the course results in an industry certification (NCCER - Carpentry 1).

Structural Systems 2: Structural Systems 2 is the advanced course for construction in the Future Ready Institute of Construction, Engineering, and Design which builds on the skills learned in both Fundamentals of Construction and Structural Systems 1. Topics covered in this course are: (1) Commercial Drawings, (2) Cold-Formed Steel Framing, (3) Exterior Finishing, (4) Thermal and Moisture Protection, (5) Roofing Applications, (6) Doors and Door Hardware, (7) Drywall Installation, (8) Drywall Finishing, (9) Suspended Ceilings, (10) Window, Door, Floor, and Ceiling Trim, (11) Cabinet Installation.  Successful completion of this course and the end of year challenge exam earns students an Early Post-Secondary Opportunity credit from Chattanooga State.


Background
Coach Cox graduated from Soddy Daisy High School in 1984 where he was an All-Region Football Player and Basketball Cheerleader.  He began his coaching career immediately afterwards as an assistant coach at Soddy Daisy Junior High.  Coach Cox pursued a career in construction and is an accomplished brick mason and carpenter.  He has worked in all levels of construction to include serving as a Construction Foreman for many years.  In 2001 Coach Cox decided to take a position in education and was selected as the Masonry / Concrete Teacher at Sequoyah High School, where he would teach through the 2015-16 school year.  After an almost 15 year absence, Coach Cox once again became an assistant football coach at Soddy Daisy Middle School in 2009, and was promoted to Head Coach in 2010.  While at Soddy Daisy Middle School, Coach Cox also coached middle school baseball.  In 2013, Coach Cox was hired to launch the high school football team at Sale Creek Middle High School, and joined the teaching staff at Sale Creek full time for the 2016-17 school year.  Outside of teaching, coaching, and construction, Coach Cox was the 1999 ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year and made 165 starts in that series, running the full season schedule from 1999 - 2004 and racing part time in other years.  Coach Cox had a best season finish of 4th in the final points standings in 2001, finished in the top 11 in final points in each year he competed full time, and accumulated 5 top 5 and 34 top 10 finishes. He retired from the driver's seat after the 2017 season.  Coach Cox earned his teaching certification from Lincoln Memorial University in 2004.
